Spectrum Blue has introduced Q-field, a revolutionary photocatalytic surface coating designed to thwart infection spread.
The Covid-19 pandemic illuminated our vulnerability to global outbreaks of infectious diseases. As we navigate the aftermath, the pressing question remains: how can we better protect ourselves from the rising threat of antibiotic resistant bacteria and future pandemics?
Spectrum Blue is pioneering a transformative solution aimed at enhancing public health through advanced technology.
The world experienced a dramatic shift during the Covid-19 pandemic, where practices like hand washing, mask-wearing, and surface sanitation became commonplace. However, as time has passed, many of these crucial habits have faded. With numerous pathogens lurking in everyday environments, the risk of infection persists, even in places we consider safe.
One significant avenue of microbial transmission is surface contact. While rigorous cleaning protocols play an essential role in infection prevention, a Norwegian company is stepping up the game with groundbreaking healthcare technology. Spectrum Blue’s innovative quantum coatings, provide a long- lasting defense against pathogens across various sectors.
A Global Health Challenge
The healthcare landscape is increasingly strained by a multitude of factors: climate change, escalating population density, a shrinking healthcare workforce, rising costs, and a surge in treatment-resistant pathogens. Some experts predict that the impact of these resistant bacteria and viruses could eclipse the effects of Covid-19, making it imperative to embrace technological advancements in healthcare.
To effectively combat infections, we must reduce the prevalence of bacteria, viruses, and fungi in communal spaces, states Brage W. Johansen, CEO of Spectrum Blue. -Currently, we rely on temporary measures like hand hygiene, room cleaning, mask-wearing, and vaccinations. While vaccines offer extended protection, other methods provide only short-term solutions, necessitating ongoing vigilance.
Infection risks are omnipresent, particularly in healthcare settings where patients are susceptible to acquiring new infections during their hospital stays. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, approximately 700,000 patients* die globally each year from healthcare-associated infections (HAIs). In UK alone, around 20,000 lives* are lost annually due to hospital-acquired infections, with an additional 300,000* requiring specialized antibiotics for treatment. -These preventable deaths are a tragedy, affecting not only the victims but also their families and the healthcare system as a whole, Johansen emphasizes.
Innovative Solutions Through Antimicrobial Coatings
Spectrum Blue has introduced Q-field, a revolutionary photocatalytic surface coating designed to thwart infection spread.
Microbes tend to cling to surfaces and form biofilms, allowing them to survive for extended periods,” explains Johansen. -By effectively eliminating biofilms, we can significantly mitigate infection risks, providing a permanent solution to a persistent problem.
The application process for Q-field is straightforward: a small percentage of the coating /pigment is mixed with a liter of paint. Once applied to a surface, Q-field generates a quantum electric field that is both harmless to humans and animals while effectively neutralizing bacteria, viruses, and fungi. When combined with hand hygiene and thorough cleaning, Q-field creates a formidable barrier against infections.
Imagine if critical surfaces in hospitals, public buildings, offices, nursing homes, restaurants, and hotels were treated with Q-field. Such widespread implementation could dramatically enhance protection against epidemics and infections. Q-field is compatible with a variety of surfaces, including walls, tables, handrails, and doorknobs, and can even be integrated into textiles like curtains and furniture. Its nontoxic formulation ensures safety for occupants while fostering a healthier indoor environment.
Commitment to Public Safety
In addition to the development of Q-field, Spectrum Blue is committed to researching the pathways of infectious disease transmission to identify key public areas that require prioritization for safety measures. The company is also working on an information system to document, manage, and map safe public spaces, reinforcing its dedication to public health.
By leveraging advanced technology like Q-field, we are not just responding to today’s health challenges; we are preparing for tomorrows. Whether it’s the growing concern over antibiotic- resistant bacteria or the unknown viruses that may one day emerge, Spectrum Blue is at the forefront of revolutionizing how we protect our communities. As Johansen puts it, “We have the tools to build safer environments. Now it’s time to put them to use.”
