Approach to Healthcare

Drinking water is an essential part of patient, staff and visitor care but recent years have seen many water coolers being removed from healthcare facilities due to risks around hygiene and infection control, with life threatening waterborne pathogens and Legionella pseudomonas posing a great risk.

Borg & Overström takes a proactive approach to healthcare by designing water dispensers that prioritise hygiene, safety, and infection control. The E6 Chilled only drinking water dispenser is engineered to minimise the risk of waterborne and surface transmission of bacteria and viruses. Its unique, shortened single water pathway eliminates dead-legs where bacteria can thrive, while DryChill® rapid cooling technology ensures reservoir-free chilling, removing the risks associated with stored water. This guarantees every glass is freshly chilled and safe, even for immunocompromised individuals.

Through the Totality® 5-step methodology, Borg & Overström ensures the highest standards of water purity. This includes 3M carbonless filtration to reduce sediment and microplastics while maintaining optimal chlorine levels for disinfection, along with Sterizen®, an independently certified antimicrobial sanitisation process.
Further enhancing safety, Viovandt® UV-C sterilisation technology provides chemical-free, eco-efficient purification, reducing bacteria and viruses. Its no-maintenance, low-power UV-LEDs maximise germicidal efficacy, ensuring consistently safe drinking water in healthcare settings.

Impact of Products/​Services on Healthcare:

Providing access to safe drinking water and protecting vulnerable and high-risk patients is a priority in hospitals, as highlighted in NHS bulletin (NETB) No. 2024/3. The E6 Chilled Only supports this initiative by restoring confidence in hygienic drinking water.

Independent testing in hospital environments with Envirocloud water consultants, has shown that the E6 Chilled only with its unique design, effectively guards against Legionella, with no Legionella shown as present in the water dispensed from the tested units, even when indicated as present in the incoming water supply.

With many trusts targeted with reducing their carbon footprint, whilst maintaining IPC levels, Borg & Overström dispensers can help take steps towards this goal. Every dispenser eliminates around 36,000 plastic bottles from entering landfill, whilst EcoMode energy-saving technology has been independently tested and proved to save around 92% of energy when compared to a normal dispenser. This significant cost saving is simply achieved by only chilling water when people are around to use it, eliminating unnecessary cooling at night or out of hours.
